The scale itself is also known as quarter scale.  For experienced miniaturists this is a great scale to challenge your creativity even further.  It is for this reason that we have created our first two 48th scale dolls house kits.  Everything in this scale should appear 48 times smaller than it would be in real life.  It is important to remember that 48 times smaller not only means the width, height and depth but more importantly the thickness of the materials used.

In converting metric to imperial measurement there are 25.4 millimetres to 1 inch. In popular dolls house scales this equates to

48th scale painted and decorated shop

The prototype of our model was created from foam board.  However, it soon became apparent that even using foam board which was only 5mm thick, the walls and floors on the final model would be totally out of scale for this type of house.  In real terms this would have made our floors and walls over 10 inches thick.  Although this may be satisfactory for the walls of some buildings it is certainly not acceptable for floors.

The carcass of our house and shop is made from 1/8th High Density Fibreboard (HDF) which is approximately 3.2mm thick.  This has reduced the thickness of our floors and walls to 6.5 inches in full scale.  The HDF is also of a higher quality than the usual Multi Density Fibreboard (MDF) and is much easier to work with and paint.

For ease, when decorating the inside of the models, we have rounded down this 6.35mm to 1 ft ratio to 6mm to 1 ft which means 1 millimetre is equal to 2 inches.  When creating miniatures of this size this seems perfectly acceptable!
